Praised be Jesus, Mary and Joseph

On the purple beads say:

Praised and blessed be Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!

Meaning in brief

This prayer praises and blesses Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, without asking for anything. It turns the heart toward the Holy Family of Nazareth, where Jesus lived obedient to his parents and advanced in wisdom and in favor before God and man (cf. Luke 2:51-52).

Intentions and hope

Catholics say it as an expression of praise and thanksgiving, often while remembering their own families. One may also hope that one's own family will grow closer to the example of the Holy Family.

When and how to pray

  1. In the Rosary, say this prayer after the Glory Be at the end of each mystery.
  2. It can also be used to close a short devotional prayer, before the closing Sign of the Cross.
  3. Say it slowly and reverently; when praying with family, one person can begin and the others can continue.
  4. This prayer is especially fitting on the Feast of the Holy Family and during the Christmas season.

Where it comes from

History

A similar short invocation is recorded in a 1944 collection of indulgenced prayers based on the Raccolta. That collection lists indulgences for the invocation "Jesus, Mary, Joseph" and for an invocation to the Holy Family at the hour of death. The record does not contain the "Praised be" wording itself, and these indulgences are older provisions that may no longer be in force today. [2]
