Key idea
Matthew 1:18-25 tells of Joseph, betrothed to Mary, who learns she is with child through the Holy Spirit and decides to divorce her quietly. Then the angel of the Lord appears to him in a dream and tells him not to be afraid. Joseph wakes, takes Mary as his wife, and names the child Jesus. This story shows a quiet faith: listening to God, showing mercy, then acting.
Matthew opens his account of Jesus' birth with unsettling news. Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together as husband and wife, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit. Imagine the moment Joseph found out. Perhaps the life he had pictured with Mary suddenly seemed to fall apart.
Matthew does not record what Joseph said. He records only what Joseph intended to do: “Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly.” (Mt 1:19) Joseph did not look for a way to defend himself. He looked for a way to spare Mary from shame.
The text says only that this was his intention. Perhaps he lay awake, his thoughts turning over and over, weighing what was right and what was merciful. Perhaps he was also afraid, since the message he would receive began with a call not to be afraid. Then, in the middle of his deliberation, the dream came.

Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." (Mt 1:20-21)
New American Bible: Mt 1:18-25
The angel addressed him as son of David, reminding him that he belonged to the line of Israel's king. The message answered Joseph's anxiety: the child was from the Holy Spirit, and Joseph was asked to take Mary as his wife. He was also given the task of naming the child. The name Jesus was chosen because he would save his people from their sins.
Matthew then pauses his story to explain its meaning. All this, he says, took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: that a virgin would conceive and bear a son, who would be named Emmanuel. Matthew explains what the name means: God is with us.
When Joseph awoke, he did not delay. He did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary as his wife. Matthew notes that Joseph had no relations with her until she bore a son. Then Joseph himself named the child Jesus. In this whole story, not a single word comes from Joseph's mouth. He answers with deeds.

Betrothal and Dreams in the Gospel
The passage says Mary was betrothed to Joseph, yet the next verse already calls Joseph her husband and Mary his wife. Because the text uses the words husband, wife and divorce, the betrothal seems to have been a binding bond. Pope Francis explains that Joseph chose to end the betrothal quietly so that Mary would not face scandal and its grave consequences, while he bore the burden of shame himself.
Pope Francis also explains that in Scripture, as in the cultures of ancient peoples, dreams were seen as a means by which God reveals himself. He calls this passage the first of Joseph's four dreams in the Gospel. This Joseph is different from the Joseph of the Book of Genesis, son of the patriarch Jacob, who is also known for his dreams.
The passage has a place in the liturgy. In his Angelus for the Fourth Sunday of Advent in 2022, Pope Francis noted that the day's liturgy presents Saint Joseph through Matthew 1:18-24. In a homily on March 20, 2017, he reflected on the reading Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24a, which, he said, concentrates all of Joseph's great responsibility in a dream.
The Meaning of Joseph's Silent Obedience
Pope Francis calls Joseph's choice a path of mercy. Then God disrupted his plans and asked him to trust, and Joseph said yes. Mary would become the Mother of the Messiah, and Joseph would become his guardian. In a homily the Pope also said that God entrusts weaknesses to Joseph. In this story, the weak and fragile ones are the Child Mary carried and Mary herself, both placed in his care.
Pope Francis sees Joseph as a man who knew how to cultivate silence and make the right decision before the Word of the Lord. His response was immediate. According to the Pope, in situations that are hard to understand, praying means letting the Lord show us the right thing to do.
For teenagers and young adults today, this story feels close. Plans can change suddenly: a choice of school, a friendship, a family situation. Joseph shows steps worth following: not shaming others even when he himself may be hurting, weighing things calmly, then acting with courage. Pope Francis's invitation to pray when the road is unclear completes that example. The name Emmanuel becomes an anchor for Advent: in Jesus, God is truly present among his people.
