Meaning in brief
This litany follows the Blood of Christ from the agony in Gethsemane, the scourging and the crown of thorns to the cross and the Eucharist, then names the Blood of Christ as the comfort of those who suffer, those who repent and the dying. Each invocation asks, "be our salvation," for we were ransomed "with the precious blood of Christ" (1 Pt 1:18-19).
Intentions and hope
The faithful pray this litany to give thanks for our redemption, to ask forgiveness of sins, and to remember those who are sick, in danger, suffering or near death. We may hope for strength and comfort in union with the Passion of Christ, while leaving the outcome to the will of God.
When and how to pray
- Begin with the Sign of the Cross and a moment of silence before a crucifix or the Blessed Sacrament.
- When prayed together, the leader says each invocation and the people respond "be our salvation."
- Pray the invocations calmly, picturing each moment of the Passion that is named.
- Close with the final part and the concluding prayer as given in the text on this page.
- It is fitting to pray on Fridays, during Lent, and in July, the month traditionally dedicated to the Precious Blood.
Where it comes from
History
According to the Catholic Dictionary, Pope John XXIII approved this litany in its present form in 1960. The litany contains twenty-four invocations beginning with the words "Blood of Christ." The phrase "present form" suggests that earlier versions existed, but the source does not describe them. [3]
The Litany of the Most Precious Blood of Jesus is among the official litanies of the Church in the 1968 Manual of Indulgences (Enchiridion Indulgentiarum). A partial indulgence is attached to praying this litany. [3]
