Short answer

A confirmation name is best chosen for the example of the saint's life, not only for its sound or meaning. A patron saint gives a model of charity and prays for us; Confirmation itself leads a person to a closer union with Christ and to the apostolic responsibilities of Christian life.

Choose a confirmation name from a saint whose life you want to follow. The Catechism says the patron saint provides a model of charity, and we are assured of his intercession (CCC 2156). Preparation for Confirmation aims to lead a person into a more intimate union with Christ, a livelier familiarity with the Holy Spirit, and a greater capacity for the apostolic responsibilities of Christian life (CCC 1309). That is why a confirmation name is best chosen for the saint's example, not just for how it sounds.

1. Start with the story, not the meaning

What a name means is interesting, but a patron saint is a person who lived, struggled and stayed faithful to God. Read the story first: what the saint faced, what the saint chose, and how the saint prayed. On the Saint Names pages of Light of Saints, every name links to the story of a saint who bore it.

2. Look for the example you need now

Ask yourself: where do I most need to grow? Some saints died young, and their lives are close to the struggles of young people.

Saint Carlo Acutis was a teenager from Milan who died on 12 October 2006, aged 15. Pope Leo XIV canonized him on 7 September 2025, together with Pier Giorgio Frassati.

Saint Aloysius Gonzaga was the eldest son of a noble family. In November 1585 he renounced his inheritance in favour of his brother to enter the Jesuit novitiate in Rome. He died aged 23 after catching the plague while caring for the sick. Pope Pius XI declared him patron of Catholic youth on 13 June 1926.

Saint Maria Goretti died on 6 July 1902. Pope John Paul II wrote that the faith she received in her family made her capable not only of defending herself but even of forgiving her murderer.

Saint Thérèse of Lisieux was born on 2 January 1873 and died on 30 September 1897, aged 24. Pope John Paul II declared her a Doctor of the Church in 1997.

3. Notice the feast day

Some people choose a saint remembered close to their birthday or their confirmation day. It is a good way to start looking, but not a rule: neither the Catechism nor the Code of Canon Law links a name to a date of birth. The Saint Names pages group names by the month of their saints' feasts.

4. Or keep your baptismal name

The Church stresses the unity of Baptism and Confirmation. The Catechism says it is appropriate that the confirmation sponsor be one of the baptismal godparents (CCC 1311), and the Code of Canon Law says the same (canon 893 §2). In our editors' view, keeping your baptismal name fits that spirit, where your parish allows it.

Before you decide

Ask your parish whether a confirmation name is expected and what the practice is. Talk your choice over with your sponsor too. The Code of Canon Law says the sponsor is to take care that the confirmed person behaves as a true witness of Christ (canon 892). A sponsor who knows why you chose your saint can help you follow that saint's example.
